Chelsea banned from making transfers until 2011
Chelsea FC have been banned by FIFA from making transfers during the next 2 transfer windows.
The governing body’s dispute chamber have ruled that Chelsea encouraged Lens player, 18 year old Gael Kakuta, to break his contract with the French club and move to West London. As a result, the player has also been banned for 4 months. Chelsea will also pay compensation to Lens.
Chelsea have the right of appeal, and if that is unsuccessful could see their trophy charge for the next two seasons heavily damaged. Chelsea also have a number of players going to this seasons African Nations Cup, and now do not have the right to bring in any back ups
A statement read “”A restriction of four months on his eligibility to play in official matches is imposed on the player Gaël Kakuta while the club FC Chelsea is banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next entire and consecutive registration periods following the notification of the present decision,” said the DRC. “Furthermore, the club, FC Chelsea, has to pay to RC Lens training compensation in the amount of €130,000.”
Kakuta has been dogged with injuries, but was voted as their 2008 Scholar of the Year after being the Academy’s top scorer. Kakuta has also been fined over £600,000 for breach of contract.
So are Chelsea the first team to “tap up” a player. Hmmm me thinks not. Expect to see an overturning of this decision by the Court Of Arbitration for Sport
Well, at least a few key Blues have signed extended contracts.
I’d be lying if I said this news didn’t make me smile but in all fairness, the entire transfer business is dirty and every club has sullied their hands at some point.
Chelsea are the scapegoat for an entire practice that has gone completely out of control.
God, why couldn’t it have been Liverpool or Man City?

A certain team from the red half of Manchester is just as bad as any, possibly the worst. Stamm, Van Nostrilboy, Ferdinand, Shearer (abortive attempt), the list goes on.
Fifa/Uefa are making examples out of english clubs of late. I want to see where in the rule book it says a punishment such as this is mandatory for such an offense. The same thing happened with Eduardo’s 2 match ban.
To me it seems like they make new rules as they go along.
I’m sure Jose Mourinho is having a laugh at the expense Ancelotti.

There is also the question as to whether the restraint of trade argument applies in such cases.
If any club is prevented from approaching players directly (and vice versa) it could be construed that the players’ right to be approached and approach has been denied. Maybe another Bosman-esque ruling will ensue.

Im tellin you now, if madrid gave cashley a sniff he would rip his contract up in front of The Shed at Stamford Bridge during a game.
FIFA could get buggered here..if chelsea overturn this it may mean that contracts become worthless…(as they sort of are now)

Seriously though, I think this will come back to bite Blatter & Platini – Chelsea have the pockets to take this as far as they want and this is exactly the sort of case that could go to the EU and set a new precedent.

@Rob: I understand your point, and if I also were a Man U fan I’d think just like you, but I don’t really remember Real Madrid acting like Chelsea did with Kakuta. I hate Real Madrid, but I have to deffend them in this matter.
And remember what Man U did with Macheda (they forced him to leave Lazio and join them). Anyway, most of the European giants have acted like this before and I think that a lot of teams could be banned for stuff like this. The first one should be Arsenal.
Well really Diego, in the UK we see how Madrid use the Spanish press to tap up all the players they want..over here you are not allowed to get away with that. I totally agree that all the teams in Europe go hunting for young talent but these players/parents are free to make decisions..of course their heads will be turned by money..But back to Madrid…FIFA should throw the book at them for the way they conduct their transfer business, but we all know that Platini et al all sit in their pocket. The way they publicly pursued Ronaldo was disgusting

Even if FIFA do make this stick Chelsea will ride it out well enough. While on the old side of the spectrum, the squad has good depth and could survive a few injuries and what not.
Whether it affects the players mentally is another matter, but Anchelotti is a good manager and will pull them through this.
