Plans for ‘Atlantic League’ resurrected

Following Rob’s post on the potential for a new European Super League, plans to install what would be named the ‘Atlantic League’ have taken off.

Back in the 1990′s, the idea was put forward to UEFA, but never took off, due to a lack of popularity. But now, President of the Dutch FA and member of the UEFA Committee Michael Van Praag has stated his desire to upstand the motion once again.

Van Praag said: “There was no way we could push that through because UEFA at that time were conservative and full of fear. Now I am part of UEFA myself and, for this course, I can begin the lobby. It makes sense to start the lobbying now”.

The League would be competed between teams from Holland, Belgium, Portugal, and Scandinavia, League’s that no one pays great attention too, as well as Celtic and Rangers. However, Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell seems reluctant to be involved, branding the concept “Frankenstein”.

Both sides are open to the idea of quitting the Scottish League, preferably to take part in the Premier League. But critics believe that this latest innovation could well split the rivals up.

We’ve had a lot of opinion here on WDKF about the matter. Many people are for the idea to start a new European League that gives sides the chance to compete for honours that they’re not able to compete for whilst playing in their respective Leagues. Perhaps this will be the answer.
