Its bull. He should only apologise to his manager and keep his trap closed.

I just think its Phil Brown. Steve Bruce wouldn't be such a tight arse about it especially considering the tweet that was made, which is in fact, already an apology.

Professional football players, amongst others, don't seem to get it do they?
Using twitter to vent your spleen, a la Darren Bent, is a bit like sending that drunk SMS, it makes you feel good only for the short time it takes for the tonne of sh1t to arrive at your door the day after.

Matters of club discipline should, as Phil Brown has attempted to do, remain in house.
Jozy Altidore is a lucky bloke, Brown could have played him and left him alone on the pitch at half time looking a bit of a nong!

hmm..and here lies the twitter dilemma:

Tweetville doesnt make me invest in anything or anyone more or less than if twitter existed or not, so i dont really get that. Twitter is a great communication tool and thats why i like it. I do think alot of people use it to feed their inner voyeur..does it really matter if we get a small taste of their private lives (private being the operative word) I think the culture of celebrity is pretty abhorrent..we should fill our lives with tangible stuff.

Babels got the right idea. If he just has friends tweetin then that is fine, but is it really important that we know what he has for breakfast. No. I totally agree that every organisation, business and publication should have its own twitter. But ultimately it is just a computer application, and we shouldnt invest too much love into it. Dont get addicted! I saw a phrase about the modern computerised world the other day. ..It said:

'We now know so many people who we shall never really know. We now have so many friends that we will never really meet. We spend so much time on our own in order to not feel alone"

I think that sums twitter and the net up nicely.

On Phil Brown..horrible man, but it was his right to do that on the pitch. i dont know why people took issue with it...he is the boss. and ultimately if he fcuks up he will be the one losing his job, not the big time charlie players.

I follow quite a few footballers on twitter, both from the Men's and the Women's game. I've noticed in the last few weeks that Ryan Babel has now protected his tweets so only those he allows can now view what he tweets. He's also just today changed his twitter name (I think this is the 3rd time he's changed it).

Twitter has been a wonderful new way for me as a fan to connect with the game and its players. I follow several players (including Jozy Altidore) and it's cool to get a small glimpse into their personal lives. When Jozy replied to one of my tweets, it made my day. When I heard of Charlie Davies accident (via Twitter), it felt a little more personal to me as I had been following Charlie's tweets for several months. My local MLS team (Real Salt Lake) uses Twitter a lot (announce ticket specials, starting line-ups, GM tweets during the games, etc.). I rely on Twitter to keep track of schedules, game times, TV coverage info, and finding streams for non-televised games (US vs. Honduras WCQ). I could go on and on and on...

Long-story short: players, coaches, managers, and clubs should be allowed to use Twitter, in fact if they were wise they would use it more (in a non-swarthy, over-the-top-marketing sort of way). They just need to be reasonable about it. Have them set guidelines and rules for proper etiquette. It's no different than the corporate world.

I'm with you, I've been following Altidore, Holden, Ching and co. and it's definitely upped my fandom. As for Hull City, they may see fit to fine him (though it seemed a pretty harmless apology to me) but I am pulling for them now and I wouldn't ever have been a fan of theirs if I hadn't been following Altidore on twitter.

Right, but what about fan investment like I said about me finally caring enough about my own national team to watch the hot mess called CONCACAF competition.
I'd actually buy a Davies or Altidore shirt now and wear it come June. Or Gooch. DC homegrown and handsome as hell.

hmmm... not sure who to side with here. altidore admits his mistake and it did not affect the outcome. i can understand the club wanting to keep issues private, but this is 2009 and his tweet didn't hurt the outcome of the game. :-/

Brown is a hypocrite. He himself has previous when it comes to public displays of displeasure/discipline.

Remember the public humiliation of his squad at half-time on the pitch in front of the whole stadium full of people and the TV audience. It didn't stay in house then, did it!

The words "pot", "kettle" and "black" seem appropriate here.

No class whatsoever - and I'm being polite

If these guys use it intelligently and for non-football matters then fine...but they are all a bit thick to post club matters. Altidore was rightfully fined.

Staff that have worked for me in the past have been told that i do not want them sharing any information about work on social networking sites, sensitive or not. I made it clear that it would end in dismissal. The line has to be neon bright so people dont drop you or them in the shit. The workplace is a professional environment whereas twitter is not.

If i was a football manager, i would ban twitter. They can live without this shit..they get paid enough. Darren Bent is living proof that the ego sometimes gets ahead of the brain.

honestly, i think what happens IN the dressing room should NOT be made public, but being FINED for a harmless apology on twitter is rather excessive.. well, i guess there are limits to these things.. but these guys SHOULD be free to use twitter etc.. UNLESS there is some sort of rule in the contract regarding the confidentiality of club affairs etc..

oh btw, its PHIL brown, not TONY.. cheers
