Spurs run riot against Wigan

We scored more than the number of fingers closed!

Ok I cannot help but be biased about this game. My heart is still beating like a drum 10mins after full-time. Let’s face it, this is a one sided game. The scoreline will not reflect it as a game of football. Coming into the match, I had no idea which Wigan side would appear. Would it be the one that was organized and committed who gave Chelsea their first loss of the season, or would it be the Wigan side that lost to Hull and Portsmouth?

As the first half ended, Spurs were in control with a one goal advantage and I was expecting it to be one of those days when Spurs play well and don’t get any reward for it, with Wigan probably nicking a goal late on. Defoe’s first goal gave me some comfort and 3 minutes later, his 2nd goal settled me a little. Scharner’s Thierry Henry-esque Hand of God v2.0 and some shoddy Spurs defending gave Wigan a lifeline, but Defoe’s hat-trick and Lennon’s goal made it 5-1 allowed me to enjoy the rest of the game.

More woeful defensive performances from Wigan gave Defoe his 4th and when former Spurs fullback Erik Edman gifted Defoe his 5th goal and Spurs 7th of the night, the chance to be the first ever double-hattrick scorer in the EPL seemed entirely achievable the way things were going. However, by this time, Lennon had already been substituted for Bentley and after his horrible short-pass moments earlier to Corluka, I didn’t trust Bentley to provide the 8th goal. A freekick was given some 30yards out and up-stepped the overpriced David Bentley and blasted in his free kick which hit the upright of the post, only to have it bounce off Chris Kirkland’s back and into the back of the net!

Kranjcar finished off the scoring with a well deserved goal for Spurs’ 9th, (yes 9th!!) goal of the night after his own impressive performance on the left made me forget we’re yet to see to return of Luka Modric.

Sure, Spurs may not be as impressive against the big boys (and one Stoke team!) but I can’t wait to see Modric, Kranjcar, Huddlestone and Lennon pulling strings in midfield for Spurs. Because the honest truth is that Spurs did not lose a game this season until the injury to Modric. And defensively, I’d still like them to be a little more solid, but if they can score more, I say what’s a couple of goals at the other end?

Besides Lennon, Defoe and Kranjcar, I thought Corluka played an excellent game and was also the provider of one of Defoe’s many goals.

This has got to count as one of my most memorable Spurs game and is also apparently the 2nd highest scoring game of the Premier League era. It certainly bodes well for Spurs as they would be riding high with confidence into next week’s game and while I don’t expect 9 goals next week, I hope their form would carry on as they did today.
